Iran: The Chain That Still Rules the Tape

Six months into the war, Brent is back above 100. The market is still trapped in the same loop I have been laying out since the war began.

It is time to review the entire chain, from Israel and Iran to Hormuz, oil, inflation, yields and the cross-asset consequences.

My framework starts with a simple premise.

Expansion is existential for Israel, just as it was for Germany and Japan a century ago

-> Iran sees that expansion as a direct threat

-> Iran needs its nuclear program as a deterrent against Israel and the U.S.

-> An Iranian nuclear deterrent would severely constrain Israel's expansion

-> Israel must prevent Iran from acquiring it

-> Israel cannot give Iran a credible guarantee that it will not attack

-> Iran will not give up its nuclear program

-> Iran will not simultaneously surrender its leverage over Hormuz

-> The U.S. cannot remove both cards without paying an enormous price

-> Temporary ceasefires, MoUs and peace headlines cannot produce a durable settlement

-> The Strait of Hormuz cannot return to sustained normal operations

-> Global energy supply remains constrained

-> Oil remains elevated and volatile

-> Inflation pressure moves downstream through the supply chain

-> Inflation expectations rise

-> The Fed is forced to stay tight and potentially hike again

-> 2Y, 10Y and 30Y yields rise

-> Equity multiples compress

-> The dollar strengthens and global liquidity tightens

-> Equities, commodities, gold and Bitcoin face cross-asset liquidation

-> Trump comes under pressure from oil, inflation, yields, equities and approval ratings

-> Trump uses TACOs, SPR releases and peace headlines to push oil lower

-> Iran's leverage over Washington weakens

-> Tankers use routes outside Tehran's approval

-> Naval escorts and alternative supply further weaken Iran's control over oil prices

-> Iran tightens passage through Hormuz to re-establish control

-> Shipping risk and the oil risk premium rise

-> If that is not enough, Iran can bring more Iran-backed groups into the conflict

-> The Houthis can widen the chokepoint war to Bab el-Mandeb

-> If the conflict escalates further, attacks can spread from shipping routes to regional oil and gas infrastructure

-> Physical supply risk rises sharply

-> Oil prices and inflation expectations reaccelerate

-> Iran restores pressure on Trump's four variables

-> The market returns to the same oil, inflation, yields and risk-asset transmission chain

Why is a durable settlement so difficult?

Expansion is existential for Israel

-> Iran needs a nuclear deterrent

-> Israel must prevent it

-> Israel cannot provide a credible security guarantee

-> Iran will not surrender its nuclear program

-> Iran will not simultaneously surrender Hormuz

-> No durable settlement

What are Iran's two cards?

Nuclear program

-> Strategic deterrence against Israel and the U.S.

Hormuz

-> Control over tanker passage

-> Control over marginal oil supply

-> Influence over oil prices

-> Direct pressure on Washington

Iran may compromise on one card

-> Iran will not voluntarily give up both

Why is Hormuz more useful than a nuclear weapon?

Control tanker passage

-> Control marginal oil supply

-> Influence oil prices

-> Influence inflation, yields, equities and approval ratings

-> Trade passage for diplomatic concessions, sanctions relief or security guarantees

A nuclear weapon provides deterrence

-> Hormuz provides deterrence, economic leverage and negotiating leverage at the same time

Why does Iran not need to defeat the U.S. militarily?

Maintain the threat

-> Keep oil elevated

-> Pressure Trump's four variables

-> Outlast Washington's political clock

-> Force concessions

Iran does not need military superiority

-> Iran only needs to endure more pain than Trump can tolerate at home

Why do peace headlines keep failing?

Peace headline

-> Oil risk premium falls

-> Yields fall

-> Equities rally

-> Hormuz leverage remains

-> The nuclear conflict remains

-> Iran's leverage weakens

-> Iran escalates again

A headline can change the tape

-> It cannot resolve the underlying conflict

Why does Trump keep pulling TACOs, and why are they not permanently effective?

Oil rises

-> Inflation rises

-> Yields rise

-> Equities fall

-> Approval ratings fall

-> Trump TACOs

-> Oil falls

-> Iran's leverage weakens

-> Iran escalates

-> Oil rises again

Oil too low

-> Iran escalates

Oil too high

-> Trump TACOs

But this cycle has a physical limit.

The SPR has fallen from roughly 415 million barrels before the war to 285 million today. More than 130 million barrels, or 31% of the pre-war reserve, have already been drained.

Trump's TACOs can crush the oil risk premium. They cannot replace missing barrels. Every SPR release buys time by spending the ammunition needed for the next spike. The lower the reserve falls, the less credible this suppression becomes.

Until there is a durable settlement that restores normal shipping through Hormuz, Trump can delay the shortage. He cannot make it disappear.

When the market is short physical barrels, a headline is not supply.

How can Iran escalate?

Tankers use the Oman-side corridor instead of a Tehran-approved route

-> Iran loses control over passage

-> Iran's bargaining power weakens

-> Iran tightens passage through Hormuz

Global producers increase supply

-> Iran loses control over the marginal barrel

-> Iran needs to restore pressure on oil prices

-> Iran-backed groups can enter the conflict more fully

-> The Houthis can disrupt Bab el-Mandeb

-> The chokepoint war expands beyond Hormuz

If that still fails to restore leverage

-> Attacks can spread from tanker traffic to oil and gas infrastructure

-> Physical production capacity comes under threat

-> The supply shock becomes harder to reverse

-> Oil moves into a higher tail-risk regime

The escalation ladder is clear.

Peace headlines and temporary pauses

-> Tighter Hormuz passage

-> Wider participation by Iran-backed groups

-> Houthi disruption at Bab el-Mandeb

-> Attacks on oil and gas infrastructure

Each step increases the pressure on oil, inflation and yields.

How does the physical oil shock spread?

Hormuz disruption

-> Tanker traffic falls

-> Available Gulf barrels decline

-> Nearby markets feel the shortage first

-> Cargoes already in transit delay the impact

-> Commercial inventories and the SPR temporarily fill the gap

-> Futures can fall on peace headlines

-> Physical products remain tight

-> Inventories continue to decline

-> Gasoline, diesel and product spreads refuse to confirm the futures selloff

-> Crude eventually reconverges with the physical market

A futures selloff is not a supply recovery.

A temporary increase in traffic is not normalization.

An SPR release buys time. It does not reopen Hormuz.

How does an oil shock become persistent inflation?

Crude reprices immediately

-> Diesel, freight and processing costs rise

-> Natural gas and fertilizer costs rise

-> Agricultural production costs rise

-> Food prices rise

-> Manufacturing and distribution costs rise

-> Inflation prints rise

-> Inflation expectations rise

-> Wage demands and repeated price increases follow

-> The supply shock becomes persistent inflation

A tariff increase can create a one-off rise in the price level.

A prolonged energy shock keeps delivering new cost increases before the previous increases have been absorbed.

How does the shock reach rates?

Persistent inflation

-> The Fed cannot remain on hold indefinitely

-> The Fed stays tight or hikes again

-> 2Y yields rise

-> Growth slows

-> Inflation uncertainty and term premium rise

-> 10Y and 30Y yields rise

-> Government debt-service costs increase

-> Fiscal credibility deteriorates

-> Bond vigilantes demand a higher term premium

-> Long-end yields rise further

Higher yields

-> Higher debt-service costs

-> Worse fiscal outlook

-> Higher term premium

-> Even higher yields

How does the shock reach equities and commodities?

Higher long-end yields

-> Equity discount rates rise

-> Multiples fall

-> Long-duration equities are hit first

-> M7 and NQ come under pressure

-> Broad equities fall

-> Leverage and credit stress rise

-> Forced selling spreads

-> Commodities, gold and Bitcoin are liquidated with equities

The inflation leg can initially support commodities.

The yield and liquidation leg can eventually crush the same commodities.

I expect these cross-asset correlations to strengthen as yields climb higher.

What happens to the dollar?

Higher oil and inflation

-> Higher U.S. yields

-> Deleveraging and safe-asset demand

-> Stronger dollar

-> Tighter global dollar liquidity

-> Pressure on emerging markets, commodities and Bitcoin

If the crisis develops into a loss of U.S. fiscal and monetary credibility

-> Treasuries are sold

-> The dollar is sold

-> Yields and gold can rise together

The dollar path is not linear. It can strengthen during the initial liquidation and weaken later if the crisis shifts to U.S. credibility.

Why can gold fall during a war?

Oil rises

-> Inflation rises

-> Yields and the dollar rise

-> Liquidation spreads

-> Gold trades like a risk asset

Gold tends to outperform before and after a crisis. It can fall with everything else during the liquidation itself.

The next phase begins only when:

Yields rise

-> The dollar rises

-> Gold refuses to fall

-> Gold decouples from yields and the dollar

-> Gold and silver begin rising alongside yields

-> The explosive precious-metals move begins

What are the three paths for gold?

Oil remains elevated

-> Trump and Bessent successfully suppress long-end yields

-> The market interprets the suppression as de facto QE or YCC

-> Gold outperforms

Oil remains elevated

-> Bond vigilantes defeat the suppression effort

-> Long-end yields explode higher

-> Cross-asset liquidation begins

-> Gold falls with the majority of assets

Hormuz returns to normal operations

-> Oil falls

-> Inflation pressure fades

-> Long-end yields roll over

-> Gold benefits from lower yields

What happens to Japan?

Higher oil

-> Higher import costs

-> More domestic inflation

-> Weaker yen fundamentals

-> Higher USDJPY

-> MOJ intervention

-> If intervention fails, the BOJ is forced to tighten faster

-> Carry trades unwind

-> Japanese equities and global risk assets come under pressure

What happens to India?

Higher oil

-> Higher import bill

-> Pressure on the current account

-> Higher domestic inflation

-> Pressure on the rupee

-> Less room for the RBI to ease

-> Pressure on growth and equity multiples

-> Pressure on NIFTY

What are the four possible outcomes?

Temporary TACO

Trump announces progress or pauses military action

-> Oil falls

-> Yields fall

-> Equities rally

-> Iran keeps its Hormuz leverage

-> The structure does not change

-> Another escalation becomes a matter of time

Durable settlement

A signed and enforceable peace agreement

-> Hormuz returns to sustained normal operations

-> The nuclear, passage and security issues are resolved together

-> The oil risk premium collapses

-> Inflation pressure fades

-> Bonds rally

-> Yields fall

-> Equities recover

Failed escalation

The U.S. expands the war

-> The U.S. fails to remove Iran's two cards quickly

-> Iran expands the conflict through Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, Iran-backed groups or energy infrastructure

-> Oil makes new highs

-> Inflation makes new highs

-> Bonds get crushed

-> Global risk assets reprice violently lower

Long limited war

No decisive victory

-> No durable peace

-> Hormuz repeatedly tightens and loosens

-> Oil trades every headline

-> Trump TACOs when domestic pressure becomes intolerable

-> Iran escalates when its leverage weakens

-> The same loop continues for months or years

This remains the structural base path.

What actually breaks the chain?

A signed and durable peace agreement

-> Sustained normalization through Hormuz

-> An enforceable arrangement covering passage, the nuclear program and security guarantees

-> Or the permanent removal of Iran's leverage over Hormuz

-> Iran loses the ability to use oil against Washington

-> The oil supply shock ends

-> Inflation pressure fades

-> Yields roll over

-> The entire Iran macro chain breaks

A peace headline is not a durable settlement.

A temporary ceasefire is not a durable settlement.

An MoU is not a durable settlement.

A temporary improvement in traffic is not normalization.

A crude futures selloff is not a physical resolution.

An SPR release is not a reopening of Hormuz.

Brent and WTI are both back above 100. ULSD is near 5 after clearing 4.03. Gasoline is testing 3.30 from above. DBA remains above 28.44.

Our technicals on Brent and WTI called the 120 ceiling in March and the floor in July. See previous Tactical Positioning issues if you're interested.

Crude -> diesel and gasoline -> freight and input costs -> agriculture and food -> inflation expectations -> yields.

The shock is already moving beyond the futures screen. Fuel and freight costs are hitting consumer margins. Airlines are adjusting capacity and fares around oil. Brazil has increased diesel support ahead of the crop season as import economics deteriorated. The second-round inflation impulse is not fully visible yet. That is the next stage, not the end of the chain.

Trump can still knock oil down with another TACO. He cannot manufacture barrels. The SPR has already fallen from roughly 415 million barrels before the war to 285 million today. Each headline buys less time. When physical barrels are missing, headlines are not supply.
